Sands Park Butterfly Garden
Butterfly Garden at Sands Park
2718 SW 43rd Terrace
Thursday mornings
Starting in May, 2024, the Garden Club began helping the city maintain the large, new butterfly garden the city planted at Sands Park. Garden club members on this committee have been planting, weeding and trimming the garden weekly. Members at large are invited to join planting events most months.
The city asked us to add only native Florida plants. This is a challenge, because few natives are offered at “big box” stores or even at small nurseries. But outside of Cape Coral, Lee County has several places to obtain plants. Sands is now an interesting place to observe native plants and see which plants survive without fertilizer or pesticides. The garden does have drip irrigation. Plants are being added and chosen for their ability to attract and support butterflies and pollinators. There is room for quite a few more plants.
Club members who work in this park can also get credit as volunteers for the city of Cape Coral. So the city asks that we register with the city when we volunteer.
The garden chairperson is Sherie Bleiler. Contact her to volunteer or for more information.
